Trajal Short Shorts Project

We’re working hard on an independent film for submission to the “Short Shorts Film Festival” in Tokyo.
“Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia” and the Japan Tourism Agency will establish a new competition titled “Let’s Travel! Project” in 2010.

The Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) was founded last year in order to increase overseas travel by the Japanese as well as visits to Japan by international travelers. JTA also serves as a key partner toward the development of tourism in the future.

To contribute to the tourism industry, we propose “short films” as a visual tool to highlight Tokyo’s attractions, culture and history.
We plan to submit our final product by December 15th to the commission.

Wish us well. Don’t miss it!!

Autumn Festivals at HTC Seattle

In Japan, autumn is the season for culture festivals, school festivals, and sports festivals. Our students in Seattle held festivals of their own at Edmonds and Shoreline Community Colleges.
In early October they held Sports Festivals. The Edmonds students held their sports event on a Sunday, and moreover the weather was rainy, so not many people showed up. The Shoreline students, on the other hand, chose a Friday after class, and they really lucked out with the weather; it was a perfect blue sky, not too cool, not too warm. They held events such as 100-meter dash, obstacle course, relay races, mounted bandana-stealing. HTC teachers also participated, and all ended up with white faces from the flour bowls in the obstacle course.
In mid-October, as part of ESL class, the HTC students on both campuses put on Japanese Culture Festivals to introduce some Japanese culture to the campus community. There were demonstrations of origami, kanji calligraphy, using chopsticks, wearing kimono, and traditional toys such as kendama. There were also explanations of the Tanabata Festival, a performance of the Soran Bushi dance, and a chorus of several popular songs with piano accompaniment. The festivals had many visitors of many different cultural backgrounds, who seemed genuinely interested in traditional Japanese culture.

The first half of October was relatively cool and dry, making the autumn leaves turn brilliant shades of red, yellow and gold everywhere. In late October, just after the leaves reached the peak of their color, the weather turned rainy and windy, causing many leaves to fall. So now, the streets, lawns, and sidewalks everywhere are covered in a colorful mosaic of fallen leaves. Also, as we prepare for Halloween at the end of this week, the orange and black of pumpkins, cats and witches are decorating stores and some homes. What kind of creative costumes will our students and staff come up with this Halloween? I will update you again next week.

What a nice surprise!!

It was a nice surprise when I saw the Trajal graduate at the World Travel Fair on Sep.18. She was working at the booth of Cruise-Vacations to host customers.
I asked her to write a story for our Trajal Blog, and she kindly accepted my request. Then a few days later, I have received the story as follow.
( Satoshi Tsukada/Travel Journal Educational Foundation)

Let me tell you the story of how I got the job. I was a cruise course student and I did an internship in Cruise-Vacations because my teacher knew the president of the company. Then I was hired when I finished my internship.
I'm in charge of operations right now, and my primary job is call handling. Also, I do data inputting, dispatching brochures and giveaways ocasionally.

I have been working so hard that I have yet to think about my future.
But I know I have to focus on studying English in order to get on board as a crew member. A cruise is such a wonderful experience that I want many people to know about. And I'd like to mention that recently honeymoon cruises are getting popular among young people.

*♪* TOU-NICHI-BUN (vol.11) *♪* from a student

Hello everyone. It’s my pressure to leave a message on the first student from my school. Because it’s my first time, I just want to introduce myself below.

I’m Jun Suk Yoon, a Korean, currently studying at Tokyo Japanese Language & Culture School. I was born in Seoul, Korea and lived there until graduating my high school. Then, I went to the United States in the summer of 2000 with a goal of becoming a designer.

In the summer of 2001, I enrolled in Northern Virginia Community College to further perfect my English. While studying a fine arts course in NVCC, I realized I enjoyed working with computer more than drawing on a piece of paper. Thus, after serious consideration, I stepped into the graphic design world. After that, because it took for a long time for me to learn English and graduate the college, I was eventually there for 5 years.

I actually wanted to transfer a school to one that has 4 year courses and spend more my time in the States, but unfortunately I had to go back to my country to serve the military. It wasn’t very nice time for 2 years but not that bad either. After done for the military service, I studied for not only computer hardware but also software while I was just working as a part time worker in several places, a sandwich store, an English school for kids, and so on.

You may doubt why I’m here now. I came to Japan because the one of my best friend, who was studying in Japan already, asked me to come. I came to Japan on January 3rd in this year. Even though I didn’t even know Hiragana and Katakana, I was able to be placed in level E class which is mid-high level because I could understand and speak Japanese somehow. I guess I’ve naturally learned from my Japanese friends around me in the States.
Then now I’m in the highest level of my school studying toward to transfer to a university in Japan, and I hope that I can leave here enjoying my life!

Hawaii Official tourism held "Hawaii seminar & workshop" performed in Ritz Carlton Osaka on Tuesday, September 15.
Three students from Bridal course participated in the Hawaii seminar as the volunteer staff from this school. In the place, the Hawaiian attraction was introduced under the theme of "Hawaii to find in a heart with a body more".

At first, there was the presentation of the overseas wedding in Hawaii which is getting popular recently. They introduced the attraction of the Hawaiian sightseeing spot, and a workshop by hospitality and tourism industry (hotel and travel agency, wedding company) which came from Hawaii.

In this seminar, these are a lot of company and groups which represented hospitality and tourism industry.
(Sandwich was prepared for a meeting place from the Ritz Carlton Osaka and was very tasty(^^♪)

The students from Bridal course were very keen on the presentation of the overseas wedding and they took the memo and asked many questions. It will be great opportunity from them!

Our student visits Osaka prefectural governor, Mr. Hashimoto

Mr Takemi, a second year student of the night hotel course in our Osaka college visited the Osaka prefectural government office and explained to the governor Mr. Hashimoto about our internship program for night course students on 11th of September.

The Osaka prefecture laid down the goal of being the number one vocational education prefecture as one of the main pillars of their education policy since Dec.2008.
As a part of building deeper cooperation between businesses and colleges, Mr. Takemi represented colleges in Osaka and informed the governor of the current situation.

Mr. Takemi studies at the night Hotel course and he works for The Hotel New Otani of Osaka as an intern in the day time.
He pays his school fees on himself.
The governor said that Mr Takemi’s experience is what he meant by college-industry relations.
He also mentioned that, when he was a student, he depended on his parents.

Our night course internship program is highly-acclaimed as a model course.
